Birth Art Workshops

Lotus Blossom Birth holds Birth Art Workshops twice every month.  You don’t have to be a great artist to receive the benefits of these workshops. Creatively expressing yourself through art can be both revealing and healing. We will gently guide you in creating birth art that can help you explore fears, develop hopes and dreams, and envision the birth of your baby and your journey into parenthood. The images and ideas you create in these workshops will empower you throughout your pregnancy and labor.

“To me birth is framed in the perfectly imperfect. It may not work from one end to the other the way you had planned but there is still beauty to be found.  A laboring woman is a hot mess of natural beauty. For me labor and birth means becoming a mother no matter if it’s the first time or the fourth, falling in love over and over again every time you take that new babe to your breast.” ~A.W.

Pam England, in her book Birthing From Within, explains it this way:

One kind of learning comes from books. But the learning necessary for you to participate  completely in your birth must come from you. In making birth art or journaling, just bringing an image to light can be surprisingly revealing (and sometimes healing). Listening to it speak to you can tell you even more.

An active, gentle exploration process not only brings overlooked resources and strengths to conscious awareness, but identifies obstacles and inhibitions that might prevent you from using them.

Birth art doesn’t have to be pretty, colorful or carefully planned. It is as raw, honest and spontaneous as birth itself.

It is important to notice how you approach making art, because it is a metaphor for how you approach doing things in your life, especially things you are unfamiliar with, such as birthing. Do you say, “I don’t know how to do this!” and hesitate, or give up altogether (leaving it up to “the professionals”)? Do you find yourself comparing yourself and competing with others? Or can you be curious and say, “Let’s see what I can do!”?

Your art, like your labor, doesn’t have to be perfect. Just give it your best effort.

“Beyond the heavens and even more expansive is the love of God as He looks beyond all to view His newest miracle.” ~M.W.

Creating birth art is a fantastic way to give life to the emotions you’re feeling about your pregnancy and upcoming birth.

The process of creating birth art requires you to actively visualize your birth. The state of mind you are in when you make art (your right brain) is the same state of mind that you are in when you labor and give birth.  It is this part of your brain that can visualize and synthesize the emotional process of creation with the emotional process of birthing.

“Words are extremely important to me, and that is why I wrote into my picture.  In labor, I want to remember what each part of my body is meant to do.  My legs need to open and release my baby.  My belly will feel full and heavy with each contraction.  My breasts should be available to nourish my baby the second it is born.  My arms will be strong and capable of caring for this new child.  And my husbands hand’s will be ready and waiting to receive our child from my womb.  That is birthing to me.” ~A.B.

Lotus Blossom Birth Workshops

Our Birth Art Workshops follow a repetitive four-session pattern, so that couples can jump in at any point in time during their pregnancy.  Workshops are scheduled on the first and third Tuesday evenings of each month.  We provide all supplies necessary, as well as a non-judgmental space to express yourself and your vision of your upcoming birth.  You do not have to be currently pregnant to come and share in our workshop.

Each session costs $20.00 per individual/$35.00 per couple.  We do offer a discount to those wishing to pay for all four sessions in advance.

We do occasionally offer sibling birth art workshops.  You can contact us with questions or stay tuned to our Facebook page for those announcements.
